Has anyone signed up for the Beta? It starts on Thursday unless you pre-ordered the game, then it's already running.

Here is the site LOTR MMO

3gb Download for the Beta client but it is both pause able and stop-restart able and there is a Bit Torrent. They are calling it a "World Tour" not sure what that really means but I will let you know.

I just activated a Beta and started a download... looks like it could be a while before it is done. I don't think I will play past the beta but I will give it a try while its free.

Although my downloaded stopped sometime in the middle of the night... I resumed it pretty early this morning and its been running for the majority of 10 hours and my progress is only 26% so I am estimating about 2-3 days depending on if the connection stays going or I have to keep checking it.

I just blew my my tax refund so I can get a new computer that will run the game. It was time for an upgrade, You know it's bad when your PC won't even run the clearance games. Now I just need to decide if I want to get addicted to a nw MMO game. It was easy to break the addiction to grinding away on WOW because my old PC was so slow.

Oooh! Whatcha gettin'!? Lemme guess:

1.) the all-new Intel QX6800 Extreme quadcore processor
2.) a 1000w Silverstone Olympia PSU
3.) 4GB low-latency DDR2 PC9600 Kingston HyperX ram
4.) 2 150gb Western Digital SATA Raptors in RAID 0 for your gaming drives and 2 750gb Western Digital Caviar SATA 3.0gb/s HDDs in mirrored RAID for your storage drives.
5.) 2 BFG NVidia GeForce 8800GTX OC video cards in SLI configuration.
6.) Vapochill phase-change cooling system so you can overclock your processor off the planet.
7.) Lian Li aluminum case.
8.) Intel Badaxe 2 motherboard (or similar).
9.) I'll withhold any commenting on Microsoft's newest attempt of an OS, from a gaming and stability standpoint. Suffice to say, perhaps you should consider dual-booting with WinXP also so you can actually play your games when you tire of tooling around with early release video drivers and unnecessarily low frame-rates. Ok, that was maybe harsh... just bear in mind that I understand that nobody really has much of a choice these days of whether their PC comes with Vista or not. You may be one of the lucky ones for whom it works. If not, may the patches flow swift and sure.

Was I close, was I close? Your tax return, of course, would have to have been astronomically large...

Congratulations on your new PC and I wish you many months of stability.

My first thoughts on the game tho I have played very little.

* Set up alot like Guild Wars; Instanced when you leave towns, smaller action hotkey bar.

* sort of confusing quest system but easily figured out after some play time.

* first death rezed me in a town I had never been to and I had no idea how to get back to where I died to finish my quest there. I will admit I did not fiddle with the map too much and I am not too sure where I was when I died.

* I enjoyed the race selection
  • Human (male)
    Human (female)
    Hobbit (male)
    Hobbit (female)
    Dwarf
    Elf (male)
    Elf (female)

So far I tried a Hobbit Burglar and an Elven Lore keeper (or Lore master at work can't remember). All in all not a bad game but I still prefer WOW. I might try to level the Elf a bit and see what a higher powered character might be like.

Lucky you... seriously!

I have had to restart the download at least 7 times now... my DSL connection has not been very stable the last couple of days and for some reason my internet has been crashing several times a day. I was at like 37% or something like that on the main download the last time it crashed so I rebooted and then it showed me at 9% (1 of 8 files) instead of (1 of 11 files) and after another 24 hours passed I am now at 22% completed (1 of 8 files) only made like 500 megabytes of progress.

I am sure it was only another hour... they were going 1 every second or so...

Just that by that point I was really tired of waiting so I just went to bed.

Also since no one has called a server I am making my first beta character on the Vilya server I guess

Well I made an elf Hunter and played till about lvl 6... all in all definately an ok game. They give some interesting payment options at the end of your trial too... apparently as an introductory offer for starting during the beta you can either pick a fixed monthly rate they will not increase or pay a one time fee of $199 and never pay again, that seems awful high but when you think about it the poor suckers playing everquest and wow pay 15 dollars a month and have been doing so for years... and the people playing guildwars still have to buy expansions so they have paid a similar amount so far. I would say that the one time fee option would be cheaper then most other games of its kind in the long run.

There are a few free to play games like Knights online but I do not recommend them because their servers are all filled with players from other countries during their peak hours and when the user lvls are peaked only premium users can log in and it costs just as much as wow to be a premium user in KO (and KO is not nearly as good of a game).

Anyone else tried playing music in this game yet? I see you can run around with lutes and strum tunes like the theme to zelda if you want or even metallica's enter the sandman... It is pretty far out.

Well, it came out today. Is anybody going to be playing it? It's just a bad idea for me to pick up an MMO again after my long stint with WoW, but I'm feeling an incredible weakness building inside me. I'm going to go to Hastings now.... we'll see what happens. The Precious is calling.

I kicked the DAOC habit about four months ago, and didn't replace it with any MMO at all. Nice feeling, actually. Anyhow, if there's one thing that five years of DAOC taught me it's that you are your own best groupmate. As such, you should have at least two accounts. Three is optimal. For a while I was running six accounts (three of mine, three of my brothers) and powerleveling three toons at the same time.

However, this behavior might not work in some MMOs. Really, a properly designed *true* role-playing game wouldn't have an auto-follow function, and enemy code would be intelligent enough to no fall victim to the simplest of aggro managment techniques.

Well, I bought it... of course. I have no willpower when it comes to gaming. So if anybody else decides to play, I'm starting with an elven hunter named Aerynar on the Nimrodel server. Oh God, it all goes downhill for me from this point forward. [Edit: Changed to Vilya server 4/25/07] [ image disabled ]

I am definately interester in giving it a try, but the only reason I was able to break my WOW addiction is because my old computer sucked and would lag down in any crowded areas (Windows XP with 256MB Ram), I don't have that problem with my new computer, so I need to stay far away from MMO's. I'll just have to work on Oblivion, because it is helping me get my RPG fix. I'm sure that LOTR online will be awesome, I played Asheron's Call for several years and Turbine did a great job.

Have fun in Middle Earth and we'll see how long my willpower can last.

Well, just be sure not to gaze upon the box. We humans haven't the will saves that hobbits enjoy. If a copy does somehow will its way into your hands, the only way to destroy it is to remove the optical-digital rings from their case and cast them off Mount Helena, er, "Doom".

On the other hand, if you're feeling PARTICULARLY WEAK, here's something to try. Go to Hastings. Find the end cap display of LOTRO boxes near the console game lockups. Sift through them until you find a "Pre-Order" copy. Pick it up, along with a regular copy of the game. The Pre-Order copies, which were still mistakenly NOT taken off the shelves as of yesterday afternoon, ring up at $0.02. Make sure they sell it to you at the marked price. Bring it home and register as a "Founder" (hey, you did buy the pre-order afterall). Enjoy a $5/mo. discount and get a couple nifty items to help your character destroy those early levels a little faster. That's what I did, anyhow. What a munchkin thing to do, eh?

Lev sent me a PM, and since it didn't seem of particular privacy, I might as well let anybody else that ends up joining know that he is also playing. He started before I did and has a couple characters on the Vilya server. Therefore, I'll also be starting a character on Vilya ... probably nearly identical to the one I started on Nimrodel, since i like him. Oh wells, I only got him to level 9.5.... so I haven't lost out on much. Doing it over again should be quite fast since I will know the how/where of all my early quests. Anyhoo:

Join us on Vilya!
